Top 5 resources to learn about business, strategy, entrepreneurship and management
I love learning. I love reading about new techniques, models, or different ways of thinking which challenge the various preconceptions I have.
One ritual I current have is printing out an article and reading it on the commute home on London's tube. While the rest of the smoldering hot traincar are listening to iPods or sleeping, I am reading, highlighting, making sidebar notes and thinking about how the article applies to anything else in my life.
There are many places on the web where you can find free and powerful knowledge on the web. The following are some of my favourite resources for knowledge and thought leadership.
- McKinsey Quarterly - They may be consultants who generally write about issues for large corporations, but these guys definitely know how to write good thought leadership on Marketing, Innovation, Economic Studies, and Technology. Most articles are free, but some articles require a McKinsey subscription (which is still well worth it).
- Strategy+Business - Like McKinsey Quarterly, Booz's Strategy+Business magazine is written more towards executives of established organizations. However, it is an excellent read and contains many articles on Innovation and Creativity. Registration is required, but access to articles are free.
- Accenture Outlook Magazine - Totally free knowledge focussing on technology issues (i.e. Green IT, Enterprise 2.0, etc) and many other industries and topics.
- Stanford's EdCorner - Valuable and Free Podcasts, Videos, Case Studies -- You can't go wrong here -- unbelievable. Go through the Intention to Venture collection (Entrepreneurship 101), and the Technology Ventures collection
- TED - When I don't feel like reading, I throw a TED video on the iPod and get inspired. All of these speakers are entrepreneurs, they understand business, and are visionaries.
Now, the 'not so free'. But, like the savvy internet users you are I am sure you could figure out how to find a PDF copy via Google or RapidShare.
- Harvard Business Review - Many articles and case studies. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a case study that doesn't detail another company who has faced a similar situation to what you are facing right now. Articles aren't free, but they are cheap (or easily found on the internets). I am very fond of HBR articles, because they present ideas as models -- which are always easier to remember and draw upon. I usually spend my time in the Innovation & Entrepreneurship section.
- Sloan Business Review - The MIT Sloan Management Review is written more towards upper management, but is also an excellent read. I have purchased the Management of Innovation pack and it is definitely work the purchase.
I am curious to see what other resources you have for these topics.
