Why have an Office of the CIO?

For CIOs, maintaining a high level perspective is critical for them to to function effectievly. CIOs should be focusing on settings goals, vision, direction, and motivating and inspiring all of IT.

One way of achieving this perspective is through the establishment of an Office of the CIO (OCIO) Organizational structure. The Office of the CIO is a team-oriented approach to IT management, which is comprised of the CIO and various specialized IT delegates. This delegation allows CIOs to spend more time building relationships with their executive counterparts, blur the lines between IT and the business function.

"Having an OCIO helps me improve the throughput and deal with the complexity that all of the businesses are dealing with, because my time is now more focused on that very valuable face-to-face time that I can spend with my peers and CEO" - Toyota Motor Sales CIO Barbra Cooper

There are reasons why wide scale adoption of this organizational structure hasn't happened.
